Marat Tagaev: Starting from 2026, state films and series will be monetized

At a meeting of the Jogorku Kenesh, the Deputy Minister of Culture, Information, Sports, and Youth Policy of Kyrgyzstan, Marat Tagaev, responded to a deputy's inquiry regarding the return of budget funds allocated for film production, as well as the current state of film distribution.
According to Tagaev, until now, films produced by the "Kyrgyzfilm" and "Kyrgyzserial" studios have primarily been educational and artistic in nature.

“Our state projects were not aimed at making a profit. This is high-level art that often does not attract a mass audience and does not generate significant box office revenue. Nevertheless, we plan to radically change this strategy,” he noted.

The Deputy Minister also added that the success of private film production in Kyrgyzstan, which brings in significant income, has served as a catalyst for reforms. Starting from 2026, state film projects will need to become commercially successful.

In addition, a separate division will be created within the structure of "Kyrgyzfilm" responsible for producing audience-oriented films. The state intends to allocate funding annually for the creation of 2-3 commercial films aimed at wide release with the goal of returning investments. All film projects carried out under government orders will be adapted to market requirements to ensure profitability.
