The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk, at an emergency session of the Human Rights Council dedicated to the situation in Sudan's El Fasher, emphasized the need for international community action to protect civilians and hold accountable those who commit violations of international humanitarian law in the region.
According to information from RIA Novosti, Turk called for urgent measures aimed at protecting the population of El Fasher and ensuring a safe exit for those wishing to leave the city.
He stressed that states must ensure unhindered access to humanitarian aid and fully fund relevant programs. Additionally, efforts must be united to hold accountable those who violate international norms during the conflict.
Turk expressed the opinion that the violence occurring in El Fasher could have been prevented.
"These are serious crimes, including mass killings, ethnic executions, sexual violence, including gang rapes, kidnappings for ransom, arbitrary detentions, and attacks on medical facilities and humanitarian workers," he listed.
At the same time, Turk noted that staff from the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) are actively collecting evidence of violations.
"Our specialists are gathering evidence that could serve as the basis for legal proceedings. We have already sent several missions to the regions from which civilians have fled and continue to send new ones," he added.
