In August 2024, successful tests of the nuclear gravity bomb B61-12 were completed at the Tonopah Test Range in Nevada, conducted using the F-35 fighter jet. The Sandia Laboratory, part of the U.S. Department of Energy, reported this event.

The tests were organized in collaboration with the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and with the support of Hill Air Force Base located in Utah.

From August 19 to 21, the F-35 fighter jet delivered and dropped inert versions of the B61-12 bomb. These tests confirmed the reliability of not only the aircraft but also the crews and the weapon system under conditions close to combat. These were the only flight tests of this bomb model on the F-35 for the current year.

A key moment of the tests was the first-ever thermal preparation of the bomb before its transport on the F-35, which allowed for the assessment of how the device withstands real operational conditions.

At the end of 2024, a multi-year program to extend the service life of the B61-12 bomb was completed, ensuring its operation for at least the next 20 years. Regular testing allows for the confirmation of laboratory assessments and the readiness of the weapons for use.

“These flight tests of the B61-12 on the F-35A resulted from a tremendous amount of planning and effort from all participants, including Sandia and many other agencies,” noted Jeffrey Boyd, project manager for the B61-12 and B61-13 at Sandia.

According to Brian Edkins, the test range manager, changes to the plan were required during the tests to ensure safety. “Thanks to the rapid coordination of the entire test team, we were able to conduct two successful days of testing, which allowed us to evaluate three test samples,” he added.

Collaboration between Sandia, the Tonopah test range personnel, and the U.S. Air Force significantly enhances the effectiveness of assessing the reliability and accuracy of the F-35 fighter jet in performing various tasks. The data obtained will be valuable to Sandia specialists in their efforts to ensure national security.
