In the Czech Republic, 32 deaths have been recorded due to the hepatitis A virus, and the total number of registered infections exceeds 3,000. This is reported by Kazinform, citing information from BILD.
As Tagesschau points out, the epidemic has not yet reached its peak.
According to official data, the outbreak began in the spring among vulnerable groups such as the homeless and people with addictions, but then spread to the entire population. The disease has now even affected Christmas markets. In the town of Boží Dar, located on the border with Germany, local authorities issued a hygiene warning three weeks ago.
At Prague's markets, vendors are using gloves and regularly disinfecting their stalls. However, as Tagesschau notes, this approach does not completely eliminate risks, as many visitors ignore the presence of sanitizers.
Milan Kubek, president of the Czech Medical Chamber, told reporters that the current wave of hepatitis A is the largest since 1979.
