According to Governor Julius Selvanus, the flooding has led to the destruction of several hundred residential and administrative buildings.
The downpour began on Monday morning on Siau Island (Siau Tagulandang Biaro district) and caused the flooding. As a result, according to local authorities, 444 people were evacuated to schools and churches.
Rescue services, along with volunteers, continue the search for the missing. The local rescue service reports that the main roads in the flooded areas are blocked by rocks, debris, and mud, making access to the affected areas difficult. Authorities have already deployed special equipment for clearing.
According to the forecast from Indonesia's meteorological agency, during the rainy season expected in January-February, the risk of flooding on the islands of Java, Sulawesi, Maluku, and Papua significantly increases. At the same time, in Sumatra and Borneo, the peak of precipitation has already passed in November-December of last year. As a result of the flooding and landslides caused by the cyclone in November, over a thousand people died in Sumatra, and hundreds are still reported missing.
