In his speech at the symposium on Wednesday, Steinmeier indicated that global democracy is under threats like never before. He spoke about recent events, including the attempt to overthrow Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, emphasizing the importance of protecting democratic values.
Although the functions of the President of Germany are mostly ceremonial, his statements carry significant influence and freedom of expression, unlike many other politicians.
Steinmeier also noted that the annexation of Crimea and the conflict in Ukraine have become important markers in history, and the actions of the USA represent another significant rupture in international relations.
“The destruction of the values on which the world order was based is coming from our key partner, the USA,” he added.
The President called for active measures in the face of threats and emphasized that countries like Brazil and India should be involved in the protection of the global order.
