In her recent speech, Giorgia Meloni emphasized the importance of forming a unified position among European countries regarding the conflict in Ukraine. The Prime Minister is convinced that it is necessary to establish negotiations not only with Kyiv but also with Moscow.

She expressed support for the idea of appointing a special envoy from Europe on the Ukrainian issue, who could help develop a common approach and a united voice in negotiations. "Such a person would be essential for effective dialogue with both sides," she added.

Meloni noted that talks with Russia are important for ensuring Europe's full participation in the peace settlement process. "If we only communicate with one side, our contribution will be quite limited," she stated.

The Prime Minister also warned against fragmented initiatives from European countries, emphasizing that coordinated actions are necessary to enhance the effectiveness of the common position. Disjointed steps could play into Vladimir Putin's hands, she believes.

Furthermore, Meloni characterized discussions about the possible return of Russia to the G8 format as premature, considering the country's exclusion from the group following the annexation of Crimea in 2014.

As of January 2026, the primary focus of efforts to resolve the conflict peacefully is on the United States, which is negotiating with both Ukraine and Moscow.

European leaders are actively communicating with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, but official peace negotiations with Russia are not currently taking place. In December 2025, French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized the need to continue military support for Ukraine and to apply pressure on the Russian economy to compel Moscow to negotiate.
