On March 5, Iranian drones struck the territory of the airport and near a school in Nakhchivan, resulting in injuries to four people. Ilham Aliyev characterized this incident as a terrorist act. Later, the State Security Service of Azerbaijan reported that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had planned to carry out several terrorist attacks on the territory of the country, prompting Baku to decide to fully withdraw its diplomatic corps from Iran.
Iranian authorities deny any involvement in this attack. Masoud Pezeshkian described the information about Iran's interference as rumors and a "conspiracy of enemies."
