The scientific team of Osh State University conducted a research expedition to the Shut pasture in the Kara-Suu district, where an archaeological site dating back to the 2nd-1st centuries BC was discovered, according to preliminary data. The university reported this.

According to the initiator of this expedition, geoecologist Abidzhapar Akkulov, numerous ceramic fragments, remnants of hand mills ("zhargylchak"), and petroglyphs, that is, images carved on stones, were discovered during the research. The ceramics, according to preliminary estimates, date back to the early Iron Age, while the petroglyphs are dated to the pre-Turkic period (before the 6th century AD).

“These findings have significant scientific value and are an important source for studying the ancient culture and economic activities of the region. In the near future, we plan to prepare a passport for the site and propose its inclusion in the Register of Historical and Cultural Objects of the Ministry of Culture, Information, Sports, and Youth Policy,” the OshSU added.

The scientific group included geoecologist Abidzhapar Akkulov, candidates of historical sciences Sabyr Arstanov and Saltanat Alisher kyzy, associate professors of the Department of History of Kyrgyzstan and Archaeology, as well as graduate student Kuttubek Orunbay uulu. Local residents and forestry staff also participated in the expedition.

Abidzhapar Akkulov noted that he first visited this area in February 2025 at the invitation of local activists. At that time, he was studying the condition of unique forest masses and pastures, as well as discussing with representatives of the Osh forestry the possibility of conducting experimental work related to climate change adaptation. It was then that he noticed traces of ancient settlements and structures.

According to experts, further comprehensive research could open new pages in the history of the southern regions of Kyrgyzstan. Thanks to the unique natural landscape of the Shut pasture, this area has significant potential for the development of both ecological and historical tourism.
