“This will provide a temporary solution; interchanges of different levels are necessary”

Construction of a new highway will begin in the southern part of Kyrgyzstan's capital, which will connect elite residential complexes with new high-rise buildings. City authorities have confirmed the inclusion of this road in the new master plan.

According to infrastructure expert Marat Musuraliyev, “the new route will help alleviate the load on the southern highway between the Southern Gates and possibly up to Mira Avenue and Kok-Jar, but this is only a temporary solution.” He explained that a similar situation occurred when the southern highway was built in 2008-2009.

“When this road was opened, it connected the 10th microdistrict with Mira Avenue and beyond. However, after 15 years, we are witnessing constant traffic jams,” the expert noted, adding that the continuation of Orto-Sai Street from Imanaliyev to Kok-Jar could significantly relieve Tokombaev Street, provided it is not too narrow.

Musuraliyev emphasized that the most effective solution for improving the transport situation in Bishkek would be multi-level interchanges at key intersections.

He said: “Two- and three-level interchanges with deceleration and acceleration lanes will significantly increase the capacity of the streets without traffic lights. Currently, the only similar structure we have is at the intersection of the bypass road and Vasilyevsky Highway, where traffic is divided into levels, and deceleration and acceleration lanes are provided for smooth entry into the flow.” This structure was built back in the Soviet era, about 40-45 years ago.

For example, in Kazakhstan, in the area of the Kordai Pass, a multi-level interchange is being constructed, connecting four directions:
- east — with Almaty;
- south — with Kordai and Bishkek;
- north — with Otar;
- west — from the direction of Merke.

Initially, this solution caused surprise, as the traffic intensity in that area was low. However, it later became clear that this solution is relevant, as it will improve safety and ensure comfortable movement in conditions of poor visibility and at night. Multi-level interchanges significantly reduce the number of traffic jams compared to building new roads,” concluded Marat Musuraliyev.
