Legendary football coach Boris Podkorytov has passed away

A coach known for his work in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan



Today, the famous football coach Boris Podkorytov has passed away, as reported by the Kyrgyz Football Union.


Boris Petrovich Podkorytov, a distinguished coach of the Kyrgyz SSR and a significant figure in domestic football, left this world at the age of 78.


Born on May 3, 1948, in Frunze, he began his football career under the guidance of the renowned children's coach Vladimir Korobchenko. In 1966, after the final of the all-Union youth tournament, Boris was invited to the experimental USSR national team preparing for the Olympic Games in Mexico City. In this team, he played alongside legends such as Yevgeny Lovchev and Sergey Olshansky. At the professional level, his career included playing for Moscow's Lokomotiv and captaining the Alga team.


After finishing his playing career, Boris Podkorytov focused on coaching. After completing courses in Moscow, he took charge of Frunze's Alga in 1980. His coaching journey also took him abroad, particularly to Algeria, where he achieved a championship title with one of the teams in 1988.


Over the years, he coached several Kazakhstani clubs, including Kainar, Astana, and Zhetysu, and was part of the coaching staff of the Kazakhstan national team.


Upon returning to Kyrgyzstan, he headed the Dordoi-Dynamo club, with which he achieved great success, repeatedly leading the team to victories in the national championship and cup. His achievements in the AFC President's Cup in 2006 and 2007 were particularly memorable.


In 2006, he served as the head coach of the Kyrgyz national team, and in 2008, he became the general director of the Dordoi club. In 2011, he worked as a consultant coach for the national team.


Throughout his career, Boris Podkorytov was repeatedly recognized as Coach of the Year and was one of the most respected and decorated mentors in Kyrgyz football.


The Kyrgyz Football Union expresses its deep condolences to the family and friends of Boris Podkorytov, as well as to his colleagues and all who knew him.


The farewell to the coach will take place on Friday, March 6.
