An important regional conference is taking place in Bishkek, bringing together representatives from governments, international organizations, experts, and youth. The main goal of the event is to discuss how educational initiatives can contribute to strengthening peace and security, as noted by Biljana Milošević, head of the ICRC Regional Delegation in Central Asia, in an interview with the Kabar agency.
In the context of growing global tensions and an increase in armed conflicts, such meetings become an important tool for raising awareness about the humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapon use. They serve as a platform for exchanging views and developing dialogue on disarmament and non-proliferation issues.
"Kyrgyzstan holds a significant position in this area, being one of the countries that signed the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. This underscores its commitment to international disarmament efforts and strengthening global security. The holding of the conference demonstrates Kyrgyzstan's leadership and its contribution to promoting peace through education and cooperation," she added.
Biljana Milošević also emphasized that the ICRC is actively working worldwide to raise awareness of international humanitarian law and the consequences of weapon use. "Together with governments, armed forces, universities, and civil society organizations, we support educational initiatives aimed at strengthening humanitarian principles and norms in situations of armed conflict. We advocate for more effective implementation of international disarmament agreements and continue to call for the prohibition and elimination of nuclear weapons due to their catastrophic humanitarian consequences," she noted.
It is worth mentioning that the conference "Education for Peace and Security," dedicated to the International Day for the Education on Disarmament and Non-Proliferation, is taking place today in Bishkek.
The event is organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic, the OSCE Program Office in Bishkek, and the International Committee of the Red Cross in Central Asia.
