Kyrgyzstan and Italy agreed to strengthen veterinary diagnostics


At the Global Conference on Reducing Biological Threats in Geneva, the Director of the Veterinary Diagnostics and Expertise Center, which is part of the Veterinary Service for Livestock Development, Pastures, and Feed under the Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Food Processing Industry of the Kyrgyz Republic, Almaz Junushbaev, met with the Director General of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), Emmanuel Schmitt, and his sub-regional representative, Mereke Taitubaev.

The parties discussed possible areas for further cooperation and agreed to launch a twinning project. This project will involve collaboration between the Veterinary Diagnostics and Expertise Center of the Kyrgyz Republic, Italian specialized laboratories, and local veterinary institutions.

The aim of this project is to strengthen the laboratory base and enhance the effectiveness of control in the field of virology.

As part of the joint initiative, it is planned to:


exchange scientists and specialists;


organize training workshops;


characterize viral isolates;


implement modern molecular testing and sequencing methods.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) fully funds the implementation of the project.

The implementation of the twinning project will significantly strengthen the laboratory capacity of Kyrgyzstan, enhance the national biosecurity system, and expand international cooperation in the field of veterinary medicine.

The successful completion of the project will improve the quality of diagnostics, enhance the scientific and technical base of the Veterinary Diagnostics and Expertise Center, and strengthen measures for the prevention and control of infectious diseases among animals.
