Kyrgyzstan, Italy, and Regional Veterinary Laboratories Agree on the Implementation of a Twinning Project

- At the Global Conference on Reducing Biological Threats in Geneva, a meeting took place between the Director of the Veterinary Diagnostics and Expertise Center of the Veterinary Service for Livestock Development, Pastures, and Feed under the Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Food Processing, Almaz Junushbaev, and the Director General of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), Emmanuel Schmid, as well as the sub-regional representative of the OIE, Mereke Taitubaev.

During the discussion, the representatives agreed to implement a twinning project that will connect the Veterinary Diagnostics and Expertise Center with Italian laboratories and local veterinary institutions.

The main objective of this project is to strengthen laboratory infrastructure and enhance the effectiveness of control in the field of virology.

As part of the joint initiative, the following activities are planned:

• exchange of specialists and scientists;

• organization of training workshops;

• analysis of viral isolates;

• implementation of the latest molecular testing and sequencing methods.

The initiative will be fully funded by the World Organisation for Animal Health.

The launch of the twinning project will be an important step for the development of laboratory capacity in Kyrgyzstan, strengthen the national biosecurity system, and expand international cooperation in the field of veterinary medicine.
