Lawyer Ikramidin Aytkulov, representing Kurmanbek Bakiev, stated in an interview with Kaktus.media that he intends to appeal to the court for a review of the verdict issued against his client.

The return of Bakiev to the country has become a relevant topic following a recent statement by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko. He noted that Bakiev is interested in returning to visit his father's grave and emphasized that he should have that opportunity. This issue will be discussed with the President of Kyrgyzstan, Sadyr Japarov.

Aytkulov explained that the possibility of Bakiev's return depends on the decision of the Constitutional Court of Kyrgyzstan, which was made in April 2025. The court established that the in absentia sentences against Bakiev could be reviewed. "We have not yet determined the date for filing, as we need time to prepare the application. Without the decision of the Constitutional Court, this would be impossible," Aytkulov added.

It is worth noting that in the past two years, the authorities have frequently raised the issue of Bakiev's potential return. In March 2024, President Japarov announced that negotiations were underway with Minsk regarding his return. Japarov expressed the opinion that Bakiev could assist in investigating cases related to the export of gold and present his version of the events that occurred in April 2010. In one of his interviews, he also mentioned that if Bakiev comes to Kyrgyzstan, an open court would be held. It should be recalled that the Constitutional Court confirmed the right to review the in absentia sentence in April 2025.

Kurmanbek Bakiev was sentenced to 30 years in prison to be served in a high-security colony, along with the confiscation of property.
