In 2023, large-scale efforts began to clean up Issyk-Kul from garbage.

According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations (MES), divers have surveyed more than 1 million hectares of the lake's bottom. By the end of 2025, about 43 tons of waste had been extracted, including over 400 kilometers of fishing nets, which were handed over to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Supervision.

In the last 4 months, fishing nets with a total length of 141 thousand meters have been extracted, which are now sent to the Eco-Technology Plant for disposal.

The MES noted that over the past 20-30 years, synthetic fishing nets have accumulated in Issyk-Kul, leading to the death of fish that became victims of poachers. These nets do not decompose and cause long-term harm to the lake's ecosystem.
