At the meeting of the Jogorku Kenesh on March 4, Deputy Mederbek Sakkaraev reported that the landfill in the village of Iskra, located in the Chui region, is 90% full.

According to the deputy, the area of the landfill is 9 hectares, and it has an environmental passport; however, its operational capabilities are practically exhausted.

“The threat to the environment is increasing due to the location of the landfill, which is on the windy side. In the event of a fire, the flames can spread quickly, and services do not always manage to contain it in time. This poses a danger both to the environment and to the health of residents in neighboring settlements. We are on the verge of the existing landfill soon ceasing to perform its functions,” he noted.

The deputy proposed two possible solutions to the problem: either the construction of a waste processing plant or the opening of a new landfill with an area of at least 5 hectares. The new facility must comply with modern environmental standards, including the presence of a leachate pit, drainage and leachate diversion systems, landfill gas monitoring, and fire safety infrastructure. “It is important to transition to civilized management of solid household waste,” he added.
