According to the new decision, the European Union will end imports of liquefied natural gas from Russia by the end of 2026, and pipeline gas will be banned starting September 30, 2027. This decision becomes "legally binding" for all member states of the bloc, as stated on the EU Council's website.

Despite the support of the majority, Hungary and Slovakia opposed this ban. Hungary plans to challenge this decision in the European Court.

Previously, before the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the share of Russian gas in supplies to the EU exceeded 40 percent; however, by 2025, this figure had decreased to 13 percent.
