The work on the feasibility study (FS) for the first line of light rail transport (LRT) in Almaty has been completed. The construction of this important infrastructure will begin in 2027 and is expected to be completed in 2029. The project, discussed for over two decades, now has clear parameters: a double-track line of 18.3 km will connect the remote areas of Alatau with the city center and the railway station "Almaty-2".
The LRT route will run along the streets of Bauyrzhan Momyshuly and Tole Bi, with the final stop at the transport interchange hub "Rayymbek Batyr". A total of 34 stops are planned along the line. The railway tracks will primarily be located in the central part of the roads, which will require significant modernization of engineering systems and changes to the road configuration.
The history of the LRT project in Almaty spans many years. In 2019, it was on the verge of implementation but was suspended due to high costs. In March of last year, the city administration initiated the creation of a new FS, and the documents are now being prepared for submission for state expertise. In the future, the new LRT line will become part of a unified transport system for the city, integrating the metro, bus routes, and suburban lines.
