August 31 is Independence Day of the Kyrgyz Republic. This is undoubtedly one of the most significant state holidays in the country, eagerly awaited by its citizens. On August 31, 1991, Kyrgyzstan was declared an independent, democratic, sovereign republic based on the Declaration of Independence adopted after an extraordinary session of the Supreme Council of the Republic, thus exiting the USSR. This day is declared an official holiday throughout the republic.
Traditionally, public festivities on Independence Day take place in the capital of Kyrgyzstan – Bishkek, at Ala-Too Central Square, where leaders from other states sometimes arrive. On this day, mass cultural events are organized in the square: parades, concerts, performances by domestic and foreign stars, exhibitions, and demonstrations dedicated to the cultural heritage and history of Kyrgyzstan. In the evening, residents and guests of the capital enjoy festive lighting and fireworks. The light decorations create a unique atmosphere of celebration in the best national traditions. Using garlands, gas-discharge lamps, LED tubes, and additional lighting decorations, real artistic ornaments of the corresponding theme are created.
This year, active preparations have already begun throughout the capital. From August 25, sports events are being held among citizens in parks, squares, and residential areas, timed to the holiday, where one can also enjoy performances by local artists.
The mayor of the capital, Kubanychbek Kulmatov, stated at a press conference: “On August 31, the festive program will begin at 9:30 AM with a speech by the President of the Kyrgyz Republic, Almazbek Atambaev. The mayor's office has prepared an ethnographic sketch titled ‘The Birth of the World’ based on the plot of ‘Manas, Semetei, Seitak’ in a musical and choreographic style. A children's ensemble will perform a theatrical presentation titled ‘Unity, Equality, and Honor!’. Preparations are in full swing: a stage and screens for live broadcasting are being set up.”
The most anticipated event of the day is the arrival of stars from the Russian pop scene. Grigory Leps, the French group “Ottawan,” “Gorod 312,” “Splin,” Vera Brezhneva, and Dima Bilan will visit Kyrgyzstan with their programs. The stars have already confirmed their participation. The concert is fully funded by the company “Gazprom-Kyrgyzstan.”
Local dance groups and domestic stars will also perform on stage: Gulzada Ryskulova, Isa Omurkulov, Meerim Karypova, Nuraiym Azikbaeva, Saltanat Ashirova, and others.
In addition to the concert, district budgets allocate about 2 million soms for the event.
