Two new cases of chikungunya fever have been identified in Hong Kong, bringing the total number of cases since the beginning of 2025 to 70. According to TASS, the information was provided by the local Center for Health Protection.
Among the new cases are a man and a woman who recently returned from a trip to mainland China. This year, the incidence has significantly increased, exceeding the number of cases recorded in all previous years by three times.
2025 has become a year of sharp increase in morbidity for Hong Kong. One fatality has also been recorded: a 77-year-old man passed away. Most of the cases are of imported origin, mainly from mainland China and Bangladesh. For the first time, four cases of local transmission have been registered, indicating the presence of virus-carrying mosquitoes in the city.
Currently, there are no effective medications or vaccines against chikungunya fever. The incubation period of the disease ranges from 3 to 12 days, after which sudden symptoms appear: high fever, chills, back and joint pain, as well as a rash. The virus is transmitted through mosquitoes of the species Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus.
