The Prime Minister of Mongolia visited Zamyn-Uud, where he got acquainted with the passenger and transport complex at the checkpoint.
During his visit, Prime Minister Gombozhavn Zandanshatar studied the operations of the passenger and transport complex at the Zamyn-Uud checkpoint (CP) and the process of cargo transportation across the border.
With the commissioning of the complex in 2023, the capacity of the Zamyn-Uud checkpoint has increased threefold. Previously, between 6,000 and 8,000 passengers passed through daily, and now this figure has risen to 8,000–12,000.
In his speech, Zandanshatar noted that until a 100% transition to electronic systems is achieved and dependence on human factors is eliminated, control and inspection must be strengthened to minimize risks. He also emphasized the importance of regular rotation of border guards and customs officers. For example, there are currently only five people working in the cargo section of the Zamyn-Uud checkpoint, which is clearly insufficient. The Prime Minister proposed to train and involve at least 15–20 staff members for this work.
The Zamyn-Uud checkpoint accounts for over 70% of the country's cargo turnover. The region is actively developing, and the population is growing. Despite the need to transform the checkpoint into a major center for trade and logistics, the Prime Minister expressed concern about the slow pace of project implementation and promised to pay special attention to this issue.
To expedite the project implementation, he instructed local authorities to complete all preparatory work to obtain city status by June 1. “Zamyn-Uud has significant potential. However, due to insufficient organization, we cannot fully utilize its capabilities. It is necessary to establish coordination, set order, and accelerate the region's development,” the Prime Minister stated.
About 25,000 people live in the somon of Zamyn-Uud, of which 5,000 to 8,000 are temporary residents. The somon generates its own income and does not receive subsidies from the budget. Last year, its budget received 18.7 billion tugriks.
