TURKPA: the referendum in Kazakhstan was held calmly and openly

According to the mission's information, on March 16, representatives of the parliaments of Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, and Turkey, as well as staff from the international secretariat of TURKPA and the Central Election Commission of Azerbaijan, held press conferences in Astana and Almaty.

The observers' statement highlighted the main changes proposed by the new Constitution of Kazakhstan. In particular, it discusses the establishment of a unicameral parliament — the Kurultai, consisting of 145 deputies with expanded powers, the introduction of the position of vice president, and the formation of the People's Council of Kazakhstan, which has the right of legislative initiative and the ability to initiate referendums.

The document also emphasizes the course of the referendum, including its legal basis, the organization of the process, voter registration, as well as the campaigning and monitoring of the voting.

Observers visited 115 polling stations in Astana, Almaty, and Turkestan on the voting day, monitoring the opening of the stations, the voting process, and the counting of votes. They noted that the referendum took place in a calm atmosphere, and the voting was organized and transparent.

TURKPA emphasized that the referendum was an important step towards the democratic development of Kazakhstan, providing citizens with the opportunity to express their views on issues of constitutional significance. The good quality of the work of the bodies that ensured the conduct of the voting and the high level of preparation of its participants were also noted.
