Today in Moscow, in a residential building on Volokolamsk Highway, an unknown assailant opened fire on Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseev, who holds the position of First Deputy Head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Russia. This was reported by RBC.
The attacker fired several shots at the officer and then fled the scene. Alekseev was urgently taken to the hospital for necessary medical assistance.
Svetlana Petrenko, the official representative of the Investigative Committee, confirmed that a criminal case has been opened in connection with the incident on charges of attempted murder and illegal trafficking in weapons. The Moscow Prosecutor's Office has taken control of the investigation. Investigators and forensic experts are working at the scene.
Since 2011, Vladimir Alekseev has served as the First Deputy Head of the GRU. In 2017, he was awarded the title of Hero of Russia for his participation in the military operation in Syria, as well as decorated with the Orders of Alexander Nevsky and "For Merit to the Fatherland" IV class.
