Jamilya Dzhamanbaeva, the ombudsman of Kyrgyzstan, has called on government agencies to intensify their efforts to combat domestic violence. She noted that current measures are not yielding tangible results, and the issue of violence against women remains pressing.

The trigger for this statement was the shocking story of a 28-year-old woman from the village of Boo-Terek in the Bakai-Ata district of the Talas region. According to her mother, the incident occurred on October 15, 2025. The woman's drunk husband returned home, started a scandal, beat his wife, and then threatened to kill her.

“He said he would kill her with an axe, went outside, and then returned with a can of gasoline and doused her. While he was looking for matches, she managed to hide her two children in another room, but she couldn't escape herself,” the mother of the victim recounted.

When the man set the gasoline on fire, the woman ran outside and tried to extinguish the flames with water. Passersby, hearing her cries for help, assisted in getting her to the hospital. Three days later, considering the severity of her condition, she was transferred from Talas to Bishkek. She spent a month in intensive care and then received treatment in the burn unit of the City Clinical Emergency Hospital until December 18.

According to the mother, the husband's relatives took the woman back to Talas without the family's knowledge and misled the doctors.

They claimed that the burns were accidentally sustained while lighting a stove. However, the victim herself revealed the truth only recently when her husband came home drunk again and started beating her. At that moment, she called her mother and asked her to come and get her.

Currently, the woman and her two children are in Bishkek with her mother. She has sustained burns over 60% of her body and requires further treatment and psychological support.

A statement has been filed with the Lenin District Police Department of Bishkek. According to the Talas region prosecutor's office, the case materials have been transferred to the Bakai-Ata District Police Department, where an investigation has been initiated.

The ombudsman's office has reported its readiness to provide the woman with legal and psychological assistance.

According to information from the Bakai-Ata district, the 32-year-old husband of the victim works at the Talas city hall and also sustained minor burns.

The ombudsman of the Kyrgyz Republic has urged law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough and swift investigation into this case to hold those responsible accountable, emphasizing that violence against women must not go unpunished.
