Since the beginning of 2026, new provisions of the Criminal Code have come into effect in Indonesia, introducing a ban on extramarital intimate relationships. According to Reuters, violators may face punishment in the form of imprisonment for up to one year.

This law also affects foreign tourists visiting Bali and other islands of the country. It is important to note that only close relatives — such as spouses, parents, or children — have the right to file complaints regarding violations related to family values. This law is part of a comprehensive legal reform aimed at revising outdated colonial norms.
