The Osh city newspaper "Vecherniy Osh" was established in January 1991 and has at different times been published under the names "Osh shamy," "Vecherniy Osh," and "Ush okshamy" in Kyrgyz, Russian, and Uzbek languages.
The founders were the Osh City Committee of the Communist Party of Kyrgyzstan and the City Council of Deputies. The first issue was published on February 1, 1991, under the editorship of Abdygani Abdugafurov, who was also the deputy chairman of the city council, and in September of the same year, the current editor-in-chief Abdirashit Urbaev became the editor. The city newspaper was organized on the basis of the mass-circulation newspapers "Golos tekstilshchika" of the Osh cotton production association and "Tekstilshchik" of the Osh silk factory. The newspaper was created after the well-known events in Osh and, according to the idea of the founders, was supposed to primarily conduct extensive work on the international education of workers.
In the first year of the newspaper's publication, its sponsors included not only the city party committee and city council but also large industrial enterprises and trade organizations. The newspaper actively promoted the successes of production teams, strengthened interethnic relations, and developed culture and sports. Articles were published on the progress of democratization of society and the implementation of reforms in various sectors of the national economy. In its very first year, the newspaper gained authority among readers. Residents of Osh turned to the editorial office with various questions, and since the newspaper was published in three languages, it was read by people of various nationalities. It should be noted that in terms of uniting people of different nationalities and strengthening the friendship of peoples, the newspaper successfully fulfilled its mission. Currently, the newspaper pays much attention to the progress of economic reforms, the implementation of a market economy, and the social protection of the underprivileged part of the population. Articles by leaders of production teams, economists, and representatives of the creative intelligentsia are published on its pages. Targeted pages have been dedicated to the reforms being carried out at the cotton production association (state joint-stock company "Tekstilshchik"), the silk factory (GAO "Zhibek"), the machine engineering plant, fuel and energy complex enterprises, and others. The newspaper pays much attention to the activities of medical institutions, the education system, and the creativity of writers, artists, composers, actors, and architects.
Following the issuance of the Decree of President Akayev "On the Preparation and Celebration of the 3000th Anniversary of the City of Osh," the newspaper "Vecherniy Osh" publishes a wide variety of materials on the history, economy, culture, and improvement of the city. On its pages, interviews are conducted with the leaders of the "Osh 3000" directorate, projects "Sulaiman-Too — Osh 3000," "Ak-Bura," "Osh-bazary," and articles by scientists, writers, and publicists are published. The newspaper "Vecherniy Osh" is becoming more popular with each passing year. Thus, according to the results of subscriptions for the second half of 1997, "Vecherniy Osh" took first place among newspapers published in the Osh region.
