Poet M. Aamatov was born in the village of Lai-Talaa in the Soviet district of the Osh region in a teacher's family.
In 1970, he graduated from the Kyzyl-Dzhol Secondary School, and in 1976 — from the philological faculty of the Osh Pedagogical Institute. He then worked for one year as a translator for the Osh regional newspaper "Lenin yolu."
From 1978 to 1980, he was a correspondent for the regional committee for television and radio broadcasting, and then worked as an editor at the main editorial office of the State Television and Radio of the Kyrgyz SSR.
Since 1982, he has been an authorized representative of the Bureau for the Propagation of Fiction in the Writers' Union of Kyrgyzstan.
The poet's first poems were published in the 1970s in the pages of regional and republican periodicals.
In 1982, his first poetry collection "Selkinchek" ("Swing") was released. Some of his works have been translated and published in Russian, Kazakh, Uzbek, and Tuvan languages. A cycle of poems was included in the book "Young Poets of Central Asia and Kazakhstan," published by the "Young Guard" publishing house in 1982. He translated lyrical works of the classic of Georgian literature I. Chavchavadze, Soviet poets I. Volobueva, K. Kubennepesov, R. Rozhdestvensky, S. Tokombaeva, O. Shestinsky, and others into Kyrgyz.
He has been a member of the USSR Writers' Union since 1986 and a member of the USSR Union of Journalists since 1980.
