General Characteristics of Glaciation

According to satellite images from "Landsat-8" for the years 2013-2016, there are a total of 9,959 glaciers in the territory of the Kyrgyz Republic, covering an area of 6,683.9 km², including: 6,227 glaciers larger than 0.1 km², with a total area of 6,494.0 km², and 3,732 glaciers smaller than 0.1 km², covering an area of 189.9 km². According to the Catalog of Glaciers of the USSR (1940s-1970s), there were 8,164 glaciers in the territory of the Kyrgyz Republic, covering a total area of 7,944.2 km², including: 6,719 glaciers larger than 0.1 km², with a total area of 7,866.6 km², and 1,445 glaciers smaller than 0.1 km², covering an area of 77.6 km². Thus, over a period of approximately 70 years, the following changes in the overall glaciation of the Kyrgyz Republic have occurred. The area of glaciation in Kyrgyzstan has decreased by 16%, the area of large glaciers has decreased by 17%, while the area of small glaciers has increased by two and a half times (by 245%). This is associated with the overall degradation of glaciation, where the degradation of large glaciers leads not only to a reduction in their areas but also to their fragmentation into separate parts that function as independent small glaciers. Additionally, in certain parts of the Catalog of Glaciers of the USSR, glaciers smaller than 0.1 km² were not accounted for at all, while in the current catalog, all glaciers larger than 0.01 km² are included. The total number of glaciers has increased by 22%. This is due to an increase in the number of small glaciers (smaller than 0.1 km²) by two and a half times (by 258%), while the number of large glaciers (larger than 0.1 km²) has decreased by 7.5%. Information on the distribution of glaciers in the main river basins of the Kyrgyz Republic is presented in Diagram 1 and Table 1.

General characteristics of glaciation in the Kyrgyz Republic

As seen from the diagram, almost half of the glaciation in the Republic is accounted for by the Tarim River basin (45%), and one-third by the Syr Darya River basin (30%). The reduction of glaciation over the considered 70-year period in the main river basins of Kyrgyzstan is presented in Diagram 2. The reduction in the area of the main part of the glaciers in Kyrgyzstan across the main basins is within 13-17%. Exceptions include: the Talas River basin, where the area reduction reaches 47%; the Chu River basin – 28%; the Amu Darya River basin – 10%; the Karadar'ya River basin – glaciation has practically not changed; and the basin of Lake Chatyr-Kul, where an area increase of 33% is observed. The data for the basin of Lake Chatyr-Kul can be considered non-representative, as glaciation in this basin is virtually absent (9 glaciers with a total area of 3.2 km²).
