In 2026, the operation of several solar power plants will begin in Kyrgyzstan, as reported by Deputy Minister of Energy Nasipbek Karimov at a meeting of the Jogorku Kenesh.

During the discussion of amendments to the Law "On Electric Power Industry," the deputies learned that the maximum capacity of electric and thermal stations will increase from 30 to 50 megawatts. The Deputy Minister emphasized that this bill will open access to tax and customs benefits for a greater number of investors wishing to build power plants in Kyrgyzstan.

Nasipbek Karimov also confirmed that hydropower plants provide over 95 percent of electricity production in the country; however, the Ministry of Energy is actively working on the development of alternative energy sources.

“In December of last year, a solar station with a capacity of 100 megawatts was commissioned. The Ministry of Energy has agreements with 12 investors for solar generation. For example, an investment agreement for 300 megawatts has been signed with OsOO 'Bishkek Solar,' and it is planned that 100 megawatts will be commissioned in 2026,” noted the Deputy Minister.

Additionally, under an agreement with another investor planning to build a solar power plant with a capacity of 1900 megawatts, it is expected that the first phase with a capacity of 150 megawatts will be launched by May 2026, and another 450 megawatts by the end of the year.

This year, the construction of another solar power plant with a capacity of 400 megawatts from another investor will also begin, Karimov reported.

After the discussion, the deputies approved the bill in the first reading.
