Starting April 1, 2026, a GOST standard for potato chips will come into effect in Russia. Six post-Soviet countries, including Kyrgyzstan, have joined this standard, as reported by the press service of Rosstandart.

Potato chips are a popular product; however, there has previously been no document establishing uniform requirements for their production, which is emphasized in the announcement.

The new standard covers chips made from natural potatoes or their processed products, which can be prepared by thermal processing or extrusion, whether baked or fried, with or without the addition of food ingredients, and must be hermetically packaged for immediate consumption.

The GOST also specifies the characteristics of the chips, such as appearance, color, taste, and smell, as well as acceptable levels of fat and salt.

Chips produced in accordance with the GOST must be crispy and crumbly, possessing a characteristic taste and aroma associated with the additives used. For chips made from natural potatoes, the fat content must not exceed 45%, while for chips made from processed products, it should not exceed 35%.

The new standard for chips has also been adopted by Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
