There are two main versions regarding the origin of the name of the village of Nura, located in the Alay district. This was shared by Gülера Belekova, a history teacher at the Isakbek Monuev Secondary School.

According to her, in the past, many hypotheses emerged about how the name of the village originated, but over time, two key ones stood out.

“In the vicinity of the village, old fir trees still grow. This is related to one of the legends, which states that the village of Nura was previously called Karagay Chaty. I consider this to be quite an interesting version. Many elderly residents, known as sanzhyrachi, have already passed away, but I managed to hear their stories about the village. There is also another version. Once, trade caravans from China passed through our village. It is said that it was these merchants who gave our village the name Nura. To stay in touch, they exchanged letters through messengers to know exactly where the caravan was. When they stopped in this area, they would say: ‘Nur chagylgan zherge zhettim’ [‘I have reached the place where the sun's ray falls’]. That’s how the name Nura came about,” shares teacher G. Belekova.
On October 5, 2008, Nura was struck by an earthquake that led to the complete destruction of the village. As a result of the tragedy, 75 people lost their lives, and more than 100 were injured.
