In one of the Russian hospitals, surgeons performed an operation to remove a tumor that had been developing for over 20 years and had reached a weight of more than 60 kg.

According to information provided by the regional Ministry of Health, this tumor was pressing on the inferior vena cava, which led to the displacement of the intestines, bladder, and other organs, filling almost the entire abdominal cavity.

Specialists from the Sverdlovsk Regional Oncology Dispensary reported that the operation was successful. The 50-year-old patient was diagnosed with liposarcoma—a tumor that arises from adipose tissue, which is located outside the organs, complicating its diagnosis. In the early stages, it often masquerades as ordinary fat tissue, and therefore did not raise concerns for two decades. The man's abdomen had been enlarging during this time without raising suspicion, until it became the cause of significant weight gain.

Doctors noted that the tumor was growing at an astonishing rate: when the patient first sought medical help, his weight was approximately 150 kg, and within a month it increased to 180 kg. Due to its size, the tumor compressed the inferior vena cava and displaced internal organs. Vadim Golodnov, head of the abdominal oncology department at the Sverdlovsk Regional Oncology Dispensary, noted that in his 30 years of practice, he had never encountered a tumor of this size.

The operation carried a high risk for the patient, including the possibility of massive blood loss and thromboembolism. Considering that the patient could not lie on his back for long periods, the doctors prepared the necessary technical solutions in advance, including positioning and intubation. The removal of the giant liposarcoma took only 40 minutes.
