In Poland, the All-Poland Farmers' Protest Association (OOPR) announced its intention to hold demonstrations against the agreement between the European Union (EU) and Mercosur. This was reported by RIA Novosti.
Mercosur is an economic union of South American countries, including Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil, and Bolivia, encompassing more than 250 million residents and over 75% of the region's total GDP.
The protests are scheduled for December 30. Farmers fear that this trade agreement threatens Polish agriculture, food security, and the sustainability of local farms. They emphasize that the deal could lead to unequal production conditions, a decline in family farms, and insufficient protection of the interests of European farmers.
“On December 30, we will once again take to the roads to urge the Sejm to firmly and decisively oppose the EU-Mercosur agreement,” noted Krzysztof Olejnik, a representative of OOPR.
Previously, farmers attempted to block this free trade agreement. After an unsuccessful attempt, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced the introduction of quotas and tariffs on imports of products from Mercosur countries if the volumes of supplies are too high.
