A recent meeting between Serik Zhumangarin, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Economy of Kazakhstan, and Gankhuu Khassuuri, his counterpart from Mongolia, was an important step in strengthening bilateral relations.
Zhumangarin, who congratulated Gankhuu on his new appointment, emphasized the significance of Mongolia as a strategic partner in the Asian region. Special attention was given to the fact that cooperation between the countries is based on trust and mutual respect, and that the foundation of the partnership lies in trade and economic ties, as reported by MiddleAsianNews citing information from Kazakhstan's media.
During the meeting, it was also noted that the presidents of the two countries set a goal to increase the volume of bilateral trade to $500 million in the medium term. The participants expressed confidence in achieving this goal through the expansion of the range of mutual supplies, the implementation of joint projects, and the removal of trade and administrative barriers.
To strengthen trade relations, Kazakhstan plans to organize a trade mission to Mongolia. This will provide an opportunity to establish direct business contacts, showcase the industrial potential, free economic zones, and export opportunities of the country.
Among the promising areas of cooperation, the participants highlighted agriculture. Issues related to expanding the export of Kazakh agricultural products, supplying veterinary vaccines, and the possibility of localizing their production in Mongolia were discussed.
From January to November 2025, the trade turnover between the countries amounted to $121.5 million, an increase of 5.5% compared to the previous period. Of this amount, exports from Kazakhstan totaled $113 million, while imports from Mongolia were $8.6 million.
Kazakhstan mainly supplies tobacco products, rapeseed, flour, bread, confectionery, oilseeds, and machinery products to Mongolia.
From Mongolia, Kazakhstan imports meat, meat products, cashmere, footwear, carpets, and wool products.
Gankhuu noted the importance of Kazakhstan as a strategic partner for Mongolia and expressed hope for the activation of bilateral cooperation in the current year. He proposed creating a working group to identify and eliminate non-tariff barriers.
The Mongolian side also expressed interest in deepening cooperation in the areas of standardization, veterinary protection, and animal husbandry.
At the end of the meeting, both sides confirmed their readiness for further development of constructive and mutually beneficial cooperation.
