Snow began to fall heavily on the Japanese islands starting January 20, and yesterday, for the first time in many years, snowfall reached Tokyo. Earlier reports indicated 35 victims and over 400 injured. According to the authorities, most of the deceased were attempting to clear snow from the roofs of their homes or surrounding areas and lost their balance. The highest number of casualties was recorded in Niigata Prefecture — 17 people. About 193 injured individuals sustained serious injuries. Information provided by The Guardian reveals that in 15 out of 47 prefectures in Japan, snow cover in some areas reached 2 meters. In Aomori Prefecture, over 1,700 homes were left without electricity, and flight and train services were canceled. The work of emergency services, including ambulances, is hindered by the snow. Japanese authorities are warning of a possible new wave of accidents due to rising temperatures, which may cause snow to melt.
