Since January 20, powerful snowfalls have swept across Japan, resulting in the deaths of at least 45 people and around 500 sustaining various injuries. According to the Japan Fire and Disaster Management Agency, the highest number of casualties has been recorded in the northwestern part of Niigata Prefecture, where 17 people have died and more than 170 have been injured.

A difficult situation is also observed in the cities of Aomori and Wakkanai, where dozens of vehicles are blocked by snow.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has warned that new heavy snowfalls are expected over the weekend in the western and northern coastal regions. Residents of the country are urged to be cautious, consider potential difficulties in transportation, and pay attention to the risk of avalanches under conditions of intense precipitation.

These warnings come amid preparations for the general elections scheduled for Sunday.
