In Slovakia, a new traffic law has raised numerous questions and jokes among the population. Social networks were actively discussing rumors about a possible speed limit for pedestrians. However, one of the authors of the bill, Deputy Ľubomír Vážny, clarified the situation on the state television channel STVR on Wednesday evening, noting that all discussions about a speed limit for pedestrians are a misunderstanding.
Vážny explained that the law actually concerns other road users, such as cyclists, skateboarders, and drivers of electric scooters and mopeds who use sidewalks.
The amendment introduced by the parliament establishes the concept of "pedestrian speed" for the first time, set at six kilometers per hour. This value will serve as a guideline for those moving on sidewalks with various vehicles, and they are required not to exceed a speed close to normal pedestrian pace.
“This doesn’t mean that everyone should walk with a speedometer,” Vážny added. “The goal of this law is to protect pedestrians, not to impose restrictions,” he emphasized.
