At a press conference in Bishkek, Mayor Aibek Junushaliev stated that a comprehensive approach is necessary to address the traffic congestion problem in the city.
The mayor emphasized that it is not enough to solve just one problem while ignoring others. "It is essential to implement the concept of '15-minute accessibility' for all districts: people should be able to reach key facilities on foot, even if they are used to driving. In the worst case, it should be comfortable for them to walk these 15 minutes," Junushaliev noted.
According to the mayor, the capital is experiencing a shortage of 45 schools and kindergartens. "By building at least one school, we will already take a step towards solving the overcrowding problem. We see that during international events, the roads become particularly congested, highlighting the vulnerability of our transport system and the need for comprehensive solutions," he added.
Junushaliev also pointed out that it is impossible to tackle traffic jams by relying solely on one mode of transport.
"It is not enough to have just cars and buses. It is necessary to develop several directions simultaneously. One of the first proposals is a tram, which can carry more passengers and does not require tracks and overhead lines. We are considering this option," the mayor emphasized.
Additionally, he mentioned that a Chinese company has proposed to build a monorail. "We are open to this proposal and are waiting for a concept for consideration within the framework of the general plan. It is important that the project does not become a burden on the budget and attracts investors," he added.
This morning, the mayor held negotiations with investors who are proposing the construction of Eastern and Western bypass roads. "We are ready to include these projects in the general plan," Junushaliev concluded.
