At a meeting of the permanent commission of the city council on issues of housing and communal services, the fuel and energy complex, and transportation, Chairwoman Dinara Bekmuratova raised the issue of garbage piles in Bishkek, inquiring when a solution to this problem would be found.

In response, Vice Mayor Ramiz Aliyev stated that the situation has positive developments.

“Last year, the fleet of the municipal enterprise ‘Tazalyk’ was modernized, and new specialized vehicles were purchased. Currently, the operation of the enterprise is organized in a regular mode, and aside from short-term accumulations, there are no significant piles observed. However, due to equipment breakdowns or a lack of drivers, in some cases, we may fall behind the established schedule by a day or two. Overall, garbage collection in all districts is being carried out according to schedule,” he noted.

Nevertheless, Dinara Bekmuratova expressed the opinion that the problem is not being resolved effectively enough, especially in the microdistricts. She suggested increasing the frequency of garbage truck visits to the areas.

The official also added that there are more than 40 locations in the city where waste needs to be cleaned up several times a day.

“The reason for this is the intensive construction of multi-story buildings, where all elements of infrastructure are provided except for garbage container sites. For example, at the intersection of Toktogul and Isanova streets, garbage is collected three times a day, although this point is intended for only four houses. Six more houses have been built around it, and container sites are not provided. In this regard, we plan to create waste sorting points, which will help improve the situation,” he added.

Ramiz Aliyev also noted that developers are required to include the presence of garbage container sites in their projects, and they are often indeed provided.

“However, for unknown reasons, this aspect is often ignored when these facilities are put into operation. Now, the city administration, under the control of the mayor of Bishkek, is monitoring this issue, and no new multi-story building will be put into operation without the presence of a container site,” emphasized the vice mayor.
