The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has approved a new strategy for the reclamation of uranium waste, covering Central Asia and aimed at 2030.

This strategic plan includes Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, and anticipates cooperation with international financial organizations and specialized institutions. The main goal of the document is the phased restoration and cleanup of lands affected by uranium mining during the Soviet period.

The total cost of the program amounts to 113 million euros, which includes construction and engineering works, project management, reserves for unforeseen expenses, and additional costs. All calculations are based on existing contracts and current estimates.

It is important to note that the new strategy also covers sites with low environmental and socio-economic risk that were previously not considered a priority. As part of bilateral agreements, Russia allocates 21.4 million euros for the reclamation of sites in Kyrgyzstan and 15.6 million euros for similar work in Tajikistan.

The IAEA emphasizes that the implementation of this plan will help avoid duplication of efforts, increase the transparency of the work being carried out, and attract additional international resources to complete the cleanup of uranium waste in the region.
