Toktogul Reservoir - the water level has decreased, the cabinet demanded to adhere to electricity limits

Electricity consumption in the country continues to rise

At a recent meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic, issues related to preparations for the autumn-winter heating season of 2025-2026 were discussed.

According to the Ministry of Energy, there is an increase in electricity consumption in the republic. In 2025, this figure reached 19.3 billion kWh, which is 900 million kWh more than in 2024. Of this amount, 15.4 billion kWh was produced within the country, while 3.9 billion kWh was imported.

This year, as in other Central Asian countries, a decrease in water inflow has also been recorded. Currently, the volume of water in the Toktogul Reservoir is 9.102 billion m³, which is 1.631 billion m³ less compared to the same period in 2025.

In this regard, experts warn of a possible water shortage, which could negatively impact electricity production. Therefore, it is extremely important to strictly adhere to the established limits on electricity consumption, which, unfortunately, is not always followed in practice.

As for coal reserves, they are sufficient for a successful heating season in the republic. A total of 3,174,792 tons of coal will be required to organize the heating process. Coal and fuel oil reserves have also been formed at the CHPPs in Bishkek and Osh.
