A wrestler from Kabardino-Balkaria won the first medal for the Kyrgyzstan national team

Malik Shavaev, competing in freestyle wrestling, won the first medal for the Kyrgyzstan national team.

At the end of 2025, the two-time Russian champion decided to compete for Kyrgyzstan, and by December, he managed to win at the national championship.

In January, he was included in the Kyrgyzstan national team to participate in the international Yasar Dogu tournament held in Turkey. Shavaev competed in the weight category up to 86 kg, starting from the round of 16.

In his first match, he won against a wrestler from Turkey, finishing the bout with a score of 9:5. Then came another victory – this time against a representative from Albania with a result of 12:2.

In the semifinals, our athlete faced a wrestler from Turkey, securing a convincing victory of 10:0, which ensured his place in the final.

The final match was against an Iranian wrestler, where Shavaev lost with a score of 1:4, but he was able to win a silver medal.

This award was his first as part of the Kyrgyzstan national team.
