Large Turtle Dove - Чоң бактек

Large Turtle Dove.

The total body length is 340–345 mm, and the wingspan is 590–600 mm. The head is dark gray, the back of the head, neck, and front of the back are gray-brown, sometimes with a pinkish-wine tint. The throat and chin are creamy-white. There are black feathers with bluish edges on the sides of the neck. The crop, chest, and front part of the belly are pinkish-wine in color with an ochre tint. The rest of the belly and the undertail are white. The tail is dark gray with a white tip, and the central feathers are dark. The beak is dark gray, and the legs are red. The flight speed reaches 55–60 km/h, and a flying bird distinctly shows a light transverse stripe at the end of the tail.

In Kyrgyzstan, the large turtle dove is widespread and is generally rare almost everywhere. It mainly inhabits floodplain forests of mountain rivers and nut-bearing forests. It is reluctant to settle in spruce forests.

The large turtle dove leads a diurnal lifestyle, with activity starting at dawn, even before sunrise, and ending at dusk after sunset. It primarily feeds in the cool early morning and late evening hours, spending the hot day in the treetops, flying out for 30–60 minutes to drink at the shores of lakes, puddles, and streams. The main food of large turtle doves consists of seeds from various plants. They gather food on the ground, usually among low vegetation, preferring the edges of dirt roads, paths, harvested fields, plowed fields, and thickets of wild hemp. Foraging flights are more often within a radius of 0.5–1.5 km during the nesting season, up to 3–5 km in autumn. They feed hurriedly, storing food in their voluminous crop.

The large turtle dove builds its nest in trees and shrubs. The clutch consists of two eggs, which are incubated by both the female and male, with chicks hatching after 15 days. Both parents participate in feeding the chicks. In August, the birds gather in flocks, and in September, mass migrations are observed. The large turtle dove is a target for sport hunting.
