The Russian Federation has made the decision to revive airship technologies. This has become possible due to the approval of the Concept for the Scientific and Technological Development of the Transport Complex, signed by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, which covers the period until 2035.
Airships are now included in the category of promising transport solutions, alongside civil supersonic aircraft, ekranoplans, and new means of aeromobility. To support these initiatives, it is planned to create at least nine centers of competence and about 50 laboratories that will work on the implementation of the concept. A new institute based at the Russian University of Transport will coordinate scientific research.
However, the revival of airship construction in the country faces certain difficulties. These include, first of all, insufficient speed and the need for significant investments in ground infrastructure. After the incidents of the 1930s and the decision made in 1964 regarding the impracticality of further developing this industry, it did not receive adequate funding in the USSR and Russia, and later initiatives, including projects for the Ministry of Defense, were not realized.
