Currently, Tajikistan receives up to 2 million kWh of electricity daily from Uzbekistan. The volumes of supply can be increased if the Uzbek energy system allows for expanded export capabilities.
Additionally, preliminary agreements on possible electricity supplies from Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan are already being discussed at the level of energy ministers, which may also transit through the territory of Uzbekistan. At the moment, the parties are working on technical aspects and issues of the energy system's capacity.
The Ministry of Energy of Tajikistan reports that the country has access to external energy markets exclusively through the Uzbek energy system via the 500 kV "Regar — Guzar" line. Expanding transit capabilities is possible after restoring the parallel operation of the Tajik energy system within the framework of the Unified Energy System of Central Asia, with full connection of Tajikistan to the regional energy ring planned for the first quarter of 2026.
Since the end of September, Tajikistan has faced restrictions on electricity supply, which became stricter at the end of November. In most regions, except for the capital Dushanbe, residents receive electricity in a limited mode. Official data indicates that electricity is supplied in the morning and evening; however, residents claim that the actual supply time does not exceed two hours a day.
According to Uzbekistan's Minister of Energy Jurabek Mirzamakhmudov, the launch of new capacities in 2025 has allowed the country to switch to net electricity exports. Supplies to Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, he said, help reduce risks caused by low water levels. In total, Uzbekistan plans to export about 2.6 billion kWh of electricity to neighboring countries.
According to the National Statistics Committee, from January to October, Uzbekistan exported electricity worth $129.7 million, which is 58.7% more compared to the same period last year. At the same time, the volume of imports decreased by 13.7%, amounting to $88.6 million.
