America the Beautiful is a patriotic song that became popular in the United States. Its music was composed by amateur composer Samuel Ward (1847—1903) in the 1880s, and in the early 20th century, the lyrics were adapted to the verses of the lesser-known author Katharine Lee Bates (1859—1929). Since its emergence in the 1930s, the song has become one of the most well-known in the United States.

In 1882, Ward created music for the words of the Protestant hymn "O Mother dear, Jerusalem," written by Scottish theologian David Dickson in the 17th century. In 1904, the composition was reinterpreted: instead of the original religious text, the secular verse by Katharine Bates, "Pikes Peak" (1895), was used. In 1904, Bates released a second edition of the lyrics, and in 1912, she published the final version titled America the Beautiful in her collection.

Since 1929, the song has become widely known. It is currently considered one of the most popular American patriotic melodies, and at various times, especially during the presidency of John F. Kennedy, there has been discussion about the possibility of replacing the national anthem — The Star-Spangled Banner — with it.
