Israel has carried out strikes on the nuclear power plant in Bushehr, as well as on Iran's petrochemical facilities.
According to the BBC, the attack occurred in close proximity to the Bushehr nuclear power plant, which was built with Russian involvement and is the only operational nuclear power plant in the country. Initial reports indicate that the main systems of the plant were not damaged, and its operation continues as usual. However, the statement emphasizes that the presence of significant amounts of radioactive materials makes any potential damage risky and could lead to a serious nuclear accident.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) expressed "deep concern" regarding the strike and noted that no changes in radiation levels have been recorded. The agency strongly emphasized that nuclear facilities "should never be subjected to attacks."
Alexey Likhachev, head of Rosatom, reported that 198 Russian employees were evacuated — they were taken away just 20 minutes after the strike towards the border with Armenia. The evacuation had been planned in advance: on April 1, Likhachev mentioned that about 200 people would leave the plant, while 50 would remain to ensure the operation of the equipment. He also reported that the deceased guard was an Iranian citizen and noted that the strike occurred "essentially on the protective perimeter" of the plant.
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi indicated on his social media that Israel and the United States "have already bombed" the facility in Bushehr four times, drawing parallels with the West's response to conflicts near the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.
Additionally, the strikes also targeted petrochemical enterprises in Bandar Mahshahr, including the petrochemical complex in Mahshahr and the Bandar Imam Petrochemical company. As a result, at least five people were killed. Workers were evacuated, and authorities assure that there is no threat of contamination for neighboring settlements.
Reports also indicate an attack on a trading terminal in Khorramshahr, where one person was killed and two were injured. The strike on a cement plant in the port of Bandar Khomir resulted in no casualties and did not affect its operation.
