Cases of infection have been identified in the state of West Bengal, near Kolkata. Currently, five cases have been recorded, three of which occurred this week. Among the infected are a doctor, a nurse, and another medical worker.
Two nurses who worked in a private clinic contracted the virus after the New Year holidays. Both are experiencing high fever and respiratory issues, with one of them having fallen into a coma. It is believed that she may have contracted the virus while caring for a patient who died before tests could be conducted.
In response to the outbreak, Indian authorities have decided to quarantine one hundred people.
The mortality rate from the Nipah virus ranges from 40 to 70 percent, and there are no effective vaccines or specific treatments available. The sources of infection may include bats or contaminated fruits.
Symptoms of the disease include high fever, headache, muscle pain, and severe weakness. In some cases, cough, shortness of breath, and pneumonia may develop.
