Switzerland supports Kyrgyzstan in its goal to ensure universal access to drinking water and sanitation by 2030, - ambassador
In his speech, which began in Kyrgyz, he quoted a proverb: "Суу — омурдун булагы" (which translates to "Water is the source of life").
Messerli noted that water is not only essential for health and survival, but also plays a key role in maintaining hygiene and preventing diseases. However, its significance goes far beyond domestic needs. Water is also vital for agriculture, industry, and energy, connecting communities and countries, which fosters peace and cooperation.
Switzerland promotes an integrated approach to water resource management. The country has assisted Kyrgyzstan in implementing the Water Code, which clearly separates resource management from water supply services. The ambassador emphasized that Switzerland is ready to continue supporting the strengthening of basin management and the regulatory system for water supply.
Additionally, he reported on a joint program for water and sanitation, within which Switzerland finances the development of the environmental sector. Switzerland is also investing in water supply and sanitation infrastructure, which has previously been directed to cities such as Bishkek, Osh, Talas, and Kant.
In conclusion, Messerli spoke about ongoing negotiations with the World Bank regarding the possible reconstruction of the strategic Ortokoy Dam in the Jalal-Abad region, located on the border with Uzbekistan, as well as opportunities for participation in the operation of the future Kambar-Ata Hydroelectric Power Plant-1.
